Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center (CHSC) has a long and remarkable history of helping individuals with communication challenges become independent members of the Greater Cleveland Community. Founded in 1921, we began with the simple mission of providing lip reading classes for adults who are deaf or hard of hearing.
We are the nation's oldest hearing and speech center and Northeast Ohio's only non-profit organization dedicated solely to serving those with special communication needs. CHSC consistently serves over 10,000 children and adults each year provides the following programs and services: Hearing, Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Speech-Language and Learning. CHSC also oversees the management of the Regional Infant Hearing Program (RIHP) which services 14 counties in Northeast Ohio.
A staff of more than 50 professionals - audiologists, sign language interpreters, speech-language pathologists, outreach specialists, and administrative staff are employed at the Center's headquarters in University Circle, and three branch offices in South Euclid, Broadview Heights, and Lorain.
Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center - Programs and Services Overview
Dr. Bernard P. Henri, CHSC's Executive Director, narrates this 6 minute video which gives a quick overview of the programs and services of the Center
New CHSC Headquarters in University Circle
In October, 2009, CHSC moved to its new headquarters at the Eastern Gateway of University Circle at 11635 Euclid Ave. The 48,000 sq.ft. building is the centerpiece of CHSC's $16 million comprehensive campaign entitled "Strong Voice Sound Tomorrow:The Campaign for Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center."
But according to Dr. Henri, "Even though the building is substantially completed and the staff has moved in, the comprehensive campaign is far from over. We must still raise over $3.5 million to reach our goal. An integral part of that goal is $800,000 needed to install the technological features in the building that will not only help our clients, but also encourage the potential of making CHSC a cutting-edge model for new research and design in the field of communication sciences and pediatric neuropsychology through our 65-year affiliation with Case Western Reserve University.
Highlights of the building include:
- State-of-the-art communication-enhancing technology which will provide more results-oriented evaluation and treatment of those with communication disorders; high-speed Internet connectivity for those who are deaf; and improved graduate student training.
- Silver-level LEED certification ("green") and fully ADA-compliant.
- Improved ease of access for CHSC clients. In addition to offering free parking, the Community Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and the audiology departments are now on the 1st floor. The speech department occupies the entire 2nd floor.
- Advancement of our affiliation with CWRU's Communication Sciences Dept., which will occupy the 3rd floor of the building, and components of the Psychology Dept. that will take up portions of the 4th floor.
- Greater access to the University Circle neighborhoods, amenities, and public transportation.
- An architectural design that complements the other unique structures in University Circle and mission of Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center.
The new facility will help CHSC fulfill its mission of doing everything it can to make Cleveland a friendlier place for individuals with communication disorders, and to help people connect in more ways with their family, friends, co-workers, and ultimately, the world.
