The Learning Center offers training, resources, and support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in Northeast Ohio. Focusing on three areas, literacy, independent living skill, and job preparedness, the Learning Center assists clients to improve skills necessary for their future success. Classes are offered in various subjects to meet the needs of clients. These classes include English, Driver’s Education, Self-Advocacy, and Money Management. The Community Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing is continually adding classes to match the community needs alongside hosting workshops and presentation in high interest subjects.
Instruction will be provided in small groups to allow for positive and successful delivery of services and social learning opportunities. Clients also have the option of receiving one-on-one instruction and community resource services. Our programs provide the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing community with supports to increase, develop and gain confidence with their skills to succeed in the future.
Our Learning Center receives referrals via other agencies, self-referral, and from CCDHH’s Support Services & Advocacy, when client objectives coincide with the services offered through the Learning Center in the areas of job readiness, literacy, and independent living skills. The Learning Center is designed to provide community based learning and training to our Adult clients (age 18 and over). The objective of each client differs, but focuses on at least one of the following areas; independent living skills, job readiness, and literacy.
The literacy component is designed to meet the needs of each client. English literacy classes are provided to promote social interaction, and allow students to flourish in a group learning environment. Additionally, we will help clients learn basic literacy needs to ensure they have a strong foundation to succeed in the hearing world. If students do not feel the group learning environment is tailored to their needs, Learning Center Staff will make appropriate arrangements for one-on-one classes, on as needed basis.
The Learning Center also offers Vocational Rehabilitation programming for clients seeking employment. Partnerships have been established with the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities to offer employment services uniquely tailored to D/deaf and hard of hearing. For more information on the Vocational Rehabilitation program please contact Michelle Czocher at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Clients are accepted on a first come first served basis, referral, and via recruitment. The Learning Center Staff will conduct an interview to determine that client meets the following criteria:
- A consumer that identifies as D/deaf & hard of hard of hearing
- Interested in developing personal growth in terms of job readiness, literacy (English), and independent living skills
