Hearing Services – Evaluation & Testing

Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center (CHSC) provides comprehensive hearing testing and personalized care available online and in-person at one of our four (4) Northeast Ohio locations. At CHSC, our audiologists are ready to help you experience life loud and clear.

Free Online Hearing Screening

Need a quick and easy way to check your hearing? Take our free online hearing test today. This convenient online hearing evaluation can identify potential hearing concerns from the comfort of your home.

In-Person Hearing Evaluations

While an online hearing test is a great first step, it does not replace a full in-person audiology test or hearing evaluation. If the results of your online test show possible hearing loss, our audiologists can provide a thorough in-office hearing test or comprehensive diagnostic exam.

Appointments typically last about an hour and include a detailed case history, personalized testing, and tailored recommendations. Test results are available immediately, and our audiologists will fully explain the results to you and your family.

Complete Hearing Evaluations for Children and Adults

During your professional hearing test, our licensed audiologists will determine:

  • The degree of your hearing loss (if any)
  • The type of hearing loss (conductive, sensorineural, or mixed)
  • Whether your hearing loss is temporary or permanent
  • How your hearing loss may affect daily communication
  • Which treatment options may be best for you

Types of Hearing Tests

Depending on your needs, your CHSC audiologist may conduct one or more of the following hearing assessments:

  • Otoscopy (exam of the ear canal and eardrum)
  • Middle Ear Testing / Tympanometry
  • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
  • Audiometry (standard hearing test)
  • Speech Testing & Speech Evaluation
  • Central Auditory Processing Testing (pediatric only)
  • Cochlear Implant Evaluations & Follow-Up (adult only)

Cochlear Implant Services

For adults who may benefit from cochlear implants, our audiologists work closely with local surgeons to provide:

  • Candidacy evaluations
  • Device selection & activation
  • Mapping and programming
  • Ongoing follow-up care

Each audiology test and hearing evaluation is tailored to your concerns, ensuring accurate results and effective treatment options.

At what age should my child have their first hearing test?

At birth, during early childhood, and at regular school screenings. Additional tests may be recommended if there are concerns about speech, learning, or frequent ear infections.

If your child did not receive a newborn screening, or if you notice delayed speech, frequent ear infections, or a lack of response to words or sounds, a pediatric hearing evaluation should be scheduled as soon as possible.

How do hearing tests vary for children vs adults?

Typically, adult hearing tests rely on more direct feedback from the patient, while children’s hearing tests use specialized, age-appropriate methods to measure hearing objectively or through play.

What factors will be used to determine if I would benefit from hearing aids?

  • The degree of your hearing loss (mild to severe)
  • The type of hearing loss (sensorineural, conductive, mixed)
  • The impact of hearing loss on your everyday life
  • Your ability to understand speech
  • Your age and developmental needs

How often should I have my hearing tested?

Adults under 50 with no known hearing loss should have their hearing evaluated every 3-5 years. Adults over 50 with no known hearing loss should have their hearing tested every 1-2 years. Any adult experiencing hearing loss or who is subject to risk factors such as regular exposure to loud environments, a family history of hearing loss, or diabetes should have their hearing tested at least once a year.
