Deaf Job Training Event Results in New Hires

Last month the Community Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing pioneered the first-ever deaf-specific job training in the state of Ohio. CCDHH staff conducted a nine-day intensive Job Seeking Skills Training for deaf and hard of hearing clients looking for employment. Job seekers learned skills to help them look for jobs that matched their skills and interests, prepare resumes and learn successful job interview strategies. Employers also learned about Deaf culture and how to make their workplaces accessible. The training culminated with a Hiring Event that drew representatives from Giant Eagle, Just Like Home, Jewish Family Services, and JSI (Janitorial Services Inc.) to interview the job seekers. Eight participants met with representatives and an interpreter to highlight the skills and knowledge they gained during the training. Representatives from Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities also attended to witness the hiring event and to review the training and recognized Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center for its success. We are excited to share that five of the eight individuals have already been placed in jobs.
